Coco de Mer Hotel and Black Parrot Suites
We were drawn to the scale of this one: a beachfront estate of more than...
Crown Beach Hotel sits directly on Pointe au Sel, on Mahé's quieter east coast, where the island's trademark granite boulders push right down to the sand. Opened in 2013, the hotel keeps a contemporary interior, bold furnishings and high-end finishes set against a backdrop of mountain and lush vegetation, rather than trying to recreate a colonial look. Twenty rooms split across five categories, from Deluxe Mountain View to a handful of Annex Villas set slightly apart from the main block, keep the property small enough to feel personal without feeling thin. It's the kind of scale that lets staff remember names by the second night.
We liked the balance here: close enough to Victoria and the airport, around 17 and 8 kilometres respectively, to stay convenient, far enough from the main tourist strip to feel calm. The small, chlorine-free pool framed by palms is a deliberate choice rather than an afterthought, and La Palette's fish-led menu gives the hotel a real kitchen rather than a buffet standing in for one. Honeymoon and anniversary packages, including a bottle of sparkling wine and floral styling in the room, show a property that pays attention to the detail of a stay rather than just the room count, and the option to book the whole address for a private group adds a flexibility few hotels this size offer.
Pointe au Sel sits on Mahé's east coast, roughly 20 metres from the hotel to the water, with direct beach access and a snorkelling spot close enough to reach on foot. The granite and forested hills that frame the property are typical of this side of the island, quieter than the busier beaches further north around Beau Vallon. Victoria's shops and markets are a short drive away, close enough for an afternoon out without the hotel losing its sense of distance from the capital, and the airport transfer stays short enough to skip a full day of travel at either end of the stay.

Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: the chlorine-free pool framed by granite and palms, steps from the beach

Amenities: beachfront pool, direct beach access, a snorkelling spot, honeymoon and anniversary packages

The room categories are deliberately varied: Deluxe rooms facing either the mountain or the sea, a couple of Family Rooms for parties travelling together, and Annex Villas set apart from the main building for guests who want more distance from the hotel's public spaces. The sea-facing categories carry the premium, unsurprisingly, but the mountain-view rooms trade the ocean outlook for the granite and greenery that give the property its character in the first place, and they tend to be the quieter choice for a longer stay.
La Palette runs dinner service indoors or on the terrace, with a menu that leans on fish alongside creole and international dishes rather than trying to cover every cuisine at once. The Jefferson Bar handles the rest: snacks, drinks and cocktails through the afternoon and evening, enough to make the pool deck a destination in its own right between meals, and a natural spot to end the day once the kitchen has closed.
Between June and October, seaweed can reach the beach in front of the hotel and cloud the water close to shore, worth knowing for anyone planning to swim rather than just sunbathe. The property can also be booked in full for a group of up to 32 adults, a detail worth asking about directly for anyone planning a wedding or a multi-family trip rather than a standard booking. Outside that window, the beach and the snorkelling spot in front of the hotel run close to their best.
